Nature
Emmen and its area
Typical of this region are the hunebeds and peat bogs. The area of Emmen offers plenty of opportunities for people looking for an authentic piece of nature. Here you can still enjoy strolling through the woods, just getting some fresh air or walking in the peat.
Stone Giants
The hunebeds and Drenthe, two words that are inseparably linked. Of the 54 hunebeds that are found in the Netherlands, 52 are in Drenthe. A visit to these stone giants can as well be described as fascinating. The longest hunebed in the Netherlands, the ‘langgraf’, is located in Emmen behind the farm museum, the Nabershof. Furthermore, there are several hunebeds in and around Emmen, also in the Emmerdennen.

Unique nature
If you are interested in natural beauty such as the ancient moorland, then we recommend you to take a closer look at the Bargerveen. Here, the State Forest Committee manages most of the Dutch peat remnants. This nature reserve takes up over two thousand acres and offers a rich variety of plants and animals. There are 220 bird species and more and more increasingly threatened plant and animal species find here a shelter. This area is very beautiful to admire as a pedestrian or by bicycle.
